The world's displaced population has doubled in a decade. Most never cross a border

Headlines follow refugees. The larger number is people displaced inside their own countries.

The UN refugee agency's annual count of people forced from their homes has risen in each of the last twelve years, and the total is now more than double what it was in the early 2010s. (‘Global Trends: Forced’)

Around two-thirds of them remain inside their own countries, where no international convention protects them and no agency has a clear mandate.

Who hosts them

Most refugees who do cross a border stay in a neighbouring country, which is usually poorer than the countries that debate quotas. Low- and middle-income states host the large majority.

Funding has not kept pace: appeals are routinely less than half met, and rations in several large camps have been cut.
