Glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya are retreating faster than the models expected

The mountains that feed ten river systems are losing ice at a pace that surprised even the scientists who study them.

A regional assessment of the range found that glaciers lost ice considerably faster in the 2010s than in the decade before, and that the rate is still rising. (‘Water, Ice, Society,’, 2023)

The implications run downstream. Nearly two billion people depend on rivers that begin in these mountains, for drinking water, for irrigation and for hydropower.

What the models missed

Global assessments have long placed mountain glaciers among the most sensitive indicators of warming, but the regional detail matters: debris cover, elevation and monsoon timing all change how quickly a given glacier responds. (‘Climate Change 2023:’, 2023)

Satellite records now give year-by-year measurements where expeditions once measured a handful of glaciers once a decade. (NASA, 2025)
