Nepal's import bill, line by line
Petroleum, vehicles, gold and food dominate. The list says a great deal about what the country makes and what it does not.

Fuel is the largest single item, followed by vehicles and parts, then a long tail of consumer goods and the raw materials for the small manufacturing base. (‘Current Macroeconomic and’ 2025)
Exports cover only a fraction of the bill. Remittances and tourism make up most of the difference.
What substitution looks like
Electric vehicles are the clearest case of a policy nudging the import list: tariff advantages have shifted buyers toward cars that run on domestic hydropower rather than imported diesel. (‘Nepal Development Update’ 2025)
