Universality places get athletes to the Games without a qualifying mark. Winning a medal is a different path entirely.

Small delegations at the Games are often there on universality places: invitations that guarantee every national committee at least a handful of athletes in swimming and athletics. (International Olympic Committee 2024)

Those athletes compete in preliminary heats and rarely advance. The experience is real; the medal chances are not.

Qualifying on merit means hitting an entry standard or a world-ranking position within a window, which in practice means years of international competition most federations cannot fund. (World Athletics 2025)
