The ranking is an Elo-style system: a team gains or loses points according to the result, the importance of the match and the strength of the opponent. Friendlies count for less than qualifiers; losing to a much stronger side costs almost nothing. (FIFA)

That is why a team can win two friendlies and fall a place, while a draw away to a higher-ranked side can lift it several.

What it is for

Rankings decide seeding in draws, which decides who you play, which decides the ranking. For a team on the edge of a qualifying pot, a handful of points can be the difference between a winnable group and a hopeless one. (BBC Sport)
